Our exceptional hotels are deeply rooted in the Southern Harz — closely connected to the people, nature, and history of the region. Under the leadership of owner Dr. Clemens Ritter von Kempski, the Naturresort & Spa Schindelbruch was renovated and expanded over a period of 10 years in three phases into an elegant wellness and conference hotel, in accordance with strict ecological criteria. This four-star superior hotel in the Harz Mountains is committed to sustainable tourism. As early as 2009, we were the first wellness hotel in Germany with (at the time) a “fully offset carbon footprint,” and we have continued to evolve consistently ever since — we remain leaders in sustainability and CSR/ESG to this day.
Together with the state-owned MEISSEN Porcelain Manufactory, we have developed a comprehensive MEISSEN hospitality concept exclusively for the Naturresort & Spa Schindelbruch. This unique brand partnership combines cultural heritage, art, craftsmanship, and lifestyle. Both companies are based in Central Germany and share values such as quality and sustainability.
The Harz wellness and conference hotel is situated in a clearing on the Großer Auerberg, not far from the climatic health resort of Stolberg. With 93 rooms, a 3,500-square-meter wellness area, four restaurants — including our gourmet restaurant “Silberstreif”—a conference area for up to 100 people, and its charming surroundings, the hotel in the Harz Mountains is a vibrant and diverse workplace. With its exceptional wellness offerings — swimming pools, a sauna village, various relaxation rooms, a beauty salon, sports activities, and a fitness center — the hotel ranks among the top 20 wellness resorts in Germany, according to the RELAX Guide, the leading guide to wellness hotels in Germany and Austria.
HOTEL & SPA SUITEN FREIWERK
The Hotel & Spa Suiten FreiWerk is not just any hotel. It is situated on a hill overlooking Stolberg and the Southern Harz Mountains. Over 120 years ago, a shipping magnate from Bremen discovered this magical spot and, in 1895, built his summer residence as a stately half-timbered complex featuring a large main house and outbuildings. Over time, the property was remodeled, expanded, and used for various purposes until it stood empty and had nearly fallen into disrepair. In 2011, Dr. Clemens Ritter von Kempski acquired the property and restored the building to its historic charm. In 2014, the former summer house in the Harz Mountains celebrated its grand opening as the FreiWerk Hotel and Forest Lounge.
In 2019, it was finally converted and expanded into its current form as a charming hideaway with 30 rooms. It is an attractive retreat with exceptional dining options and a small but exquisite wellness and conference area. In 2024, the Private Spa Suites opened—two-story suites for a luxurious vacation for two in complete privacy.
It’s no coincidence that FreiWerk has been named “Guests’ Favorite of the Year” for the third time: Our team at Ritter von Kempski Private Hotels & Resorts loves their work—and it shows. A total of 170 operational employees from our region and all over Germany—including 35 apprentices, among two dual-track students—are part of our family. We’ll continue to grow in the future.
